Preparing email infrastructure for a SOC 2 audit

SOC 2 is not a badge you self-assign. It is an evidence program, a control system, and a third-party audit process.

Start with the correct claim

A company is not SOC 2 approved because it has security features. SOC 2 Type I and Type II reports are issued after an independent CPA firm audits controls against the selected Trust Services Criteria.

Until that process is complete, the right language is SOC 2 readiness or SOC 2 audit preparation. That distinction protects customers and keeps sales conversations honest.

Build evidence before buying the audit

The audit depends on proof. Access reviews, change management, incident response, vendor review, backup tests, logging, monitoring, encryption, and customer data handling all need clear owners and repeatable records.

For email infrastructure, evidence should also include domain verification controls, DKIM key handling, abuse review, suppression behavior, webhook signing, queue operations, and support access boundaries.

Turn product controls into audit controls

Many useful controls already exist in a serious platform: scoped API keys, audit logs, admin-only routes, webhook signatures, verified sending domains, rate limits, and delivery logs.

The work is to connect those controls to policies, review cadence, alerting, retention, and evidence exports so an auditor can verify they were operating across the audit window.

Operator checklist

  • Pick the audit scope and Trust Services Criteria before writing policies.
  • Assign owners for access, change, incident, vendor, and data controls.
  • Collect evidence continuously instead of rebuilding it during audit week.
  • Use precise language until the independent report is issued.
